Our History
With over 100 years and four generations of independent banking experience, we at Union State Bank have one old-fashioned idea about community banking. We like to call it Customer Service. We recognize that it is impossible to be all things to all people; however, it is our privilege to serve our customers and their communities with the utmost in contemporary banking products, services and technology. We consider ourselves a rare breed of bank during the rush to merge small banks into big banks over the last several decades, especially considering today's climate of "bigger is better". We are proud to have successfully emerged into the twenty-first century as a strong, independent bank serving Alabama in the Jefferson and Shelby County areas with six full-service offices, along with offices in St. Clair and Cherokee Counties. In 2004, we expanded our regional scope by opening our first office in the State of Florida on Airport Road in Destin. And most recently, we are proud to announce the opening of our newest Florida office located on Rattlesnake Hammock Road in Naples.

Our roots in community banking can be traced over one-hundred years. At the turn of the twentieth century, three railroads merged in a place just forty miles east of the bustling industrial city of Birmingham. As often happened in those days, a city sprang up where the rails crossed. Pell City, Alabama in St. Clair County has since continued to be a progressive, southern town. In 1903 a group of foresighted businessmen, led by J. Fall Roberson, Sr., collaborated to form a bank that would serve the citizens and businesses of the newly developing St. Clair County area. The Honorable Sumter Cogswell served as the first President of the bank which was originally chartered as The Bank of St. Clair County. In 1910 the bank received a national charter and was renamed The First National Bank of Pell City. Then, in 1918, the name was finally changed to Union State Bank.

The bank is currently served by Reed Alexander, Sr. as Chief Executive Officer and Rex Alexander, President. Brothers Reed and Rex succeeded their aunt Gloria V. Roberson who presided over the bank for nearly forty years following the death of her husband J. Fall Roberson, Jr. As one of the few women to head a bank in the United States during her time, Mrs. Roberson was a role model for all women who aspired to leadership in the business community. Mrs. Roberson remained an actively engaged bank executive until her death in 1999. She was involved in many facets of service in the Alabama banking industry, including the Alabama Independent Bankers Association as well as other state-wide banking organizations. For her service and leadership, Mrs. Roberson received national and statewide recognition for excellence in management.

Under its current leadership of third and fourth generation community bankers, Union State Bank has grown to 14 regional offices, 134 employees and assets totalling 351 million dollars.
